Saudi–Emirati Divergence over the American “Freedom Project”
The American “Freedom Project,” announced by President Donald Trump to reopen the Strait of Hormuz after weeks of paralysis, exposed a notable divergence between Saudi and Emirati strategic discourse. While Saudi Arabia refused participation in military escalation and emphasized de-escalation, many Emirati commentators framed the project as a strategic necessity to deter Iran and restore maritime security. The result was a rare public intellectual divide between two Gulf partners over how regional order should be preserved.
