The recent drone attacks against Saudi Arabia and the UAE — allegedly launched from Iraqi territory — have revived one of the Gulf’s central strategic questions: can Iraq still function as an independent Arab state connected to its Gulf environment, or has it become structurally embedded within Iran’s regional security architecture? The controversy intensified after Gulf states accused Iranian-backed Iraqi militias of carrying out attacks from inside Iraq, while Baghdad simultaneously denied the existence of conclusive evidence and promised investigations.
